News has recently come out that UFC heavyweight fighter Shane Carwin has sheduled back surgery due to problems with a disc in his lower back. The former UFC interim heavyweight champion had his last fight at UFC 131 against Junior Dos Santos. Unfortunately Carwin lost this fight by unanimous decision and as a result lost a potential title shot against the current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Shane Carwin released the news of his sheduled surgery via his official website. Here is what he had to say “As I ramped up my training for UFC 141 my body locked up during training. It wasn’t like the Lesnar fight but my back just tightened up and I froze. I scheduled an MRI and the results showed that my disc in my lower back is into the nerves . My doctor gave me two options; retire and I could probably go on for a few years without surgery or I could undergo surgery and continue my career.” He then went on to say “The decision was easy. I have unfinished business. The UFC had me lined up to face one of the best in the world and I am confident I have everything I need to be a Champion. I am scheduling surgery and I hope to return to the Octagon by spring or summer 2012.”

Shane previously underwent surgery on his neck in November 2010, this surgery was a sucess and Carwin made his return against Junior Dos Santos in June of this year. I wish Shane a sucessful surgery and speedy recovery, I can’t wait to see him back in the octagon again competing. Most MMA fans will remember the electric atmosphere when Shane Carwin took on Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight title at UFC 116. Shane suffered his first MMA loss that night but it was undoubtably an exciting match in which we saw Carwin gass out due to a barrage of strikes launched on Brock in the first round. I believe we could see a healthy Shane Carwin reach the top of the heavyweight division again and challenge for the title at some point in the future.
