We are set to see more action from fighters within lighter weight classes at UFC events. UFC president Dana White announced the introduction of a new 125-pound division in the UFC. He made the announcement shortly after UFC 140 had taken place this past weekend. There will be a 125-pound tournament held to determine the title holder for that division.
The first of the tournament fights will take place at UFC on FX 2 which will be held on the 3rd of March 2012. We will see Demetrious Johnson take on Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez against Yasuhiro Urushitani on the night. These fights will act as the semi-final stage of the tournament leading to a fight between the two winners for the title on a different date.
The introduction of these lighter weight classes adds variation to the type of fights we will see at UFC events. It all ties in very well with the integration of the WEC fighters that moved over when that organisation was closed down. Many of the fights we have seen so far from the lighter weight classes have been exciting and high paced so personally I think it works really well. Also with more shows to fill due to the deal with Fox I think it is great timing to introduce the new weight class.
Thanks Guys,
Jay Cee.
