A new bout has been added to the MFC 36 card as newly signed lightweight fighters Dave Castillo (16-5, 1 NC) and Kurt Southern (10-3) are now set to square off. The event will take place at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, February 15th.
MFC officials recently announced the new matchup via official press release.
MFC 36 is set to feature a headline bout between Mukai Maromo and Graham Spencer, who will engage in a lightweight battle. Castillo vs. Southern will kick off the main card which airs LIVE on AXS TV.
Dave Castillo last fought at “Showndown Fights 9″ in November, where he dropped a third round TKO loss against Justin Buchholz. Prior to that he had been on a six fight winning streak, defeating notable fighters such as Ricky Musgrave, John Gunderson and Gordon Bell. Dave will no doubt look to get himself back into the win column with a good performance against Southern.
“I want to stand and trade with Southern. I know he’s an experienced wrestler so I’m working on my takedown defense. But even if he does get me down, I’ve got my submissions, and I still strike from the bottom. I never stop striking.” – Dave Castillo
Meanwhile, Kurt Southern is currently riding a three fight winning streak, more recently defeating Jorge Britto via unanimous decision at SFS 1 in June 2011. Prior to that he scored a unanimous decision victory over Brad Cardinal at AMMA 6 in March 2011, and a first round submission win over Mukai Maromo at AMMA 5 in October 2010. Southern now has a chance to extend his winning streak to four by defeating Castillo on Feb. 15.
