Sports has always was been filled with unexpected outcomes, surprising results and upsets. Rooting for the underdog is something I feel is part of human nature, everyone likes to see the little guy succeed.
If you are into betting then there is a lot of money to be made from picking the next team or sportsperson to cause an upset. Throughout sports history things have happened that no fan or expert would have been able to predict.
A good example of this in Mixed Martial Arts is when Matt Serra faced Georges St-Pierre for the UFC welterweight championship at UFC 69. Serra won The Ultimate Fighter 4 title eliminator, earning himself a shot at the title. The odds on Matt Serra winning the fight were 7 to 1, as no-one expected the up and coming New York native to pose a threat to GSP. However, Matt ended up scoring a first round KO and became the new UFC welterweight champion, shocking everyone in the industry and proving that you can never count a fighter out.
