Ryan Couture, the son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, has been released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship following back-to-back losses in the promotion.
News of Ryan Couture’s release was first reported by MMAJunkie.com, who received the news from Ryan’s manager Sam Spira .
It is safe to say that Couture didn’t get an easy ride in the UFC, there were definitely no “warm up” fights for the 31-year-old. In his debut Ryan suffered a second round TKO loss against British fighter Ross Pearson at UFC on Fuel TV 9, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden, back in April. Then at UFC 164 in August he dropped a unanimous decision loss to former TUF 15 contestant Al Iaquinta at UFC 164.
When Ryan joined the UFC he had been on a four fight winning streak, defeating Maka Watson, Conor Heun, Joe Duarte and K.J.Noons. He made the move over to the UFC after the Strikeforce promotion was dissolved.
Ryan’s release was a bit of an anti-climax after many people felt he could follow in the footsteps of his father and potentially reach championship level within the world of Mixed Martial Arts. Now it seems he will be left looking for a job in another promotion, and to be honest it would not surprise me if Bellator decide to bring Ryan on board. A move like that would make sense considering Ryan’s father, Randy Couture, is currently engaged in a multi-platform deal with Bellator broadcast partner Spike TV.
