UFC veteran Roy “Big Country” Nelson will collide with undefeated AKA fighter Daniel Cormier in a heavyweight showdown at UFC 166. The event takes place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 19.
This fight should be particularly interesting as a stand-out victory from either man would definitely put them into the mix for a title shot. Cormier has made it clear that he plans to move down to light-heavyweight after the Nelson bout, but anything can happen.
Just think, if Cain Velasquez defeats Junior Dos Santos and the UFC offer Cormier the next title shot it would make for one hell of a story line if teammates were to battle for the championship. I am only speaking hypothetically, but there is no denying that it would make for a great fight.
Meanwhile, Roy Nelson has just renewed his contract with the UFC and enters this fight coming off a unanimous decision loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 in June. He now has the chance to prove to his employers that they have made the right decision by giving him a new deal, and with a win, that he is one of the best fighters in the division.
This weekend we are likely to see a contrast in styles as former Pan American Games Gold Medalist Daniel Cormier brings a solid wrestling base, and BJJ black belt Roy Nelson brings heavy hands and high-level grappling skills.
I am sure former Strikeforce fighter Cormier will want to make his second fight in the UFC more exciting then the first at UFC on FOX 7. Scoring a dominant unanimous decision victory over Frank Mir, who is a former UFC heavyweight champion that has been fighting top-level competition for years, is a nice way to start your promotional campaign. However, when you are a hot prospect with an undefeated record people expect to see something impressive.
I am not sure how the fight will play out or how it will end, but I do think it will be a thrilling encounter.
