Article first published as UFC Preview: Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos on Technorati.
This Saturday on November 12, 2011 we will see the UFC’s first appearance on the Fox television network. The event will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. This will be a landmark card for the UFC as it will be their debut on the Fox network, they will only be airing the main event live in a one hour special. The rest of the card will be shown on Facebook and FoxSports.com. The main event will feature the UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez against Junior Dos Santos.
The champion Velasquez is undefeated with an MMA record of 9-0. His most recent victory in which he won the UFC heavyweight title was against former WWE star turned MMA fighter Brock Lesnar. The fight took place at UFC 121 in October of 2010, Cain won the fight via TKO in the first round earning himself “Knockout Of The Night” honors and the UFC belt. Before winning the title Cain Velasquez scored notable victories over top fighters Cheick Kongo, Ben Rothwell and Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira leading him to a well deserved shot at the heavyweight gold. This bout against Junior Dos Santos will be Cain’s first title defense and what better stage for it to take place then the UFC’s first appearance on Fox. There will be the pressure to retain the belt topped with the pressure to perform on the night, this is something Velasquez will be able to handle and it will be great to see what game plan he will use against Dos Santos.
Junior Dos Santos earned his title shot by defeating Shane Carwin in his last fight at UFC 131. Junior has an MMA record of 13-1 having defeated fighters like Roy Nelson, Stefan Struve and Gabriel Gonzaga in his rise to the top of the division. Earlier in the year Dos Santos and Brock Lesnar were the coaches on Season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter. The plan was for the two men to face each other in June but Lesnar got ill and had to pull out. This led to Shane Carwin replacing Brock in the number one contender bout which Junior Dos Santos won by unanimous decision. Both Junior and Cain have great striking and boxing so it will be interesting to see what direction the fight goes in. I think the chances of us seeing a knockout early in the fight are very high as both men are hard hitting and fast. I cannot wait to see this heavyweight title fight and the new format for the first UFC event airing on Fox. It should be an interesting weekend.
