A title fight between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (21-1) and Erik Koch (13-1) is in the works for UFC 149, the fight has not yet been officially announced but looks very likely to take place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, according to multiple sources.
The fight will headline UFC 149 which is set to take place on July 21st at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome with the main card airing on pay-per-view and the preliminary bouts on FX and Facebook.
Aldo has long been rumored to be on the UFC 149 card but when the middleweight championship fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen was moved from UFC 147 to 148 UFC President Dana White suggested that Aldo could potentially be moved to UFC 147 to fill the spot. Since then it has emerged that Aldo would not have been ready in time for that fight and it looks like he will now actually remain on the UFC 149 card after all.
Jose Aldo has won all three of his UFC fights and has successfully defended his title against Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian, and most recently Chad Mendes. The fight against Mendes took place at UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Aldo won via TKO in the very first round; this leaves him on a fourteen fight winning streak which contains eight victories within the now defunct WEC promotion. Jose’s dominance continues to impress fans everywhere and there is doubt that he is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world at this current time.
Erik Koch enters this fight on a four fight winning streak with victories over Bendy Casimir, Francisco Rivera, Raphael Assunção, and most recently Jonathan Brookins in September 2011 where he won via decision. Koch also competed in the WEC which is where he suffered his only career defeat against Chad Mendes at WEC 47 losing by decision. This will be Erik’s third fight in the UFC and I am sure he would love nothing more than to take the UFC featherweight belt away from Aldo, but it won’t be easy against the seemingly unstoppable Brazilian.
The UFC 149 card is shaping nicely so far:
