It’s been announced that “Judo” Jimmy Wallhead has decided not to renew his contract with BAMMA. At this stage we don’t know what the 29-year-old has in the pipeline, but he has decided not to stay with the promotion.
BAMMA announced Wallhead’s departure on Wednesday night via official press release.
The news comes ahead of BAMMA 15, which takes place at the Copper Box Arena on April 5th, where many fans were hoping to see Wallhead engage in a re-match for the BAMMA world welterweight title.
However, Wallhead’s departure now opens up the doors for his former teammate Paul Daley to potentially challenge for the title. When Daley originally signed with the promotion he was excluded from being a title contender because he had vowed never to fight with Wallhead who is part of the same weight-class. But now that his former teammate has chosen to part ways with BAMMA we could see Daley in a fight for the title very soon.
Here is what BAMMA Director, Ashley Bothwell, had to say about Wallhead’s departure:
“We are sorry to see Jim go, as he was well loved at BAMMA as a true BAMMA icon. We wish him all the best in his future.”
Wallhead last fought at BAMMA 14 in December 2013, where he scored a third round KO win over Florent Betorangal. That victory put “Judo” back into the win column following a decision loss to Eddy Ellis at BAMMA 13 in September. Jimmy is currently ranked no.2 in the UK’s welterweight division so I would like to think he has chosen to move onto greener pastures, but I guess we will just have to wait and see.
