UFC 165 is set to take place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Saturday, September 21st. The event will feature a headline bout between current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and title challenger Alexander Gustafsson.
Fans and followers of Mixed Martial Arts are particularly interested in this matchup because Gustafsson will be one of the only fighters Jon has faced who can claim to hold similar physical attributes to him. They are both tall guys with a long reach, whereas in the past Jones has been more used to facing smaller guys with a shorter reach compared to his own.
It will be interesting to see if the similarities in physical stats will provide a solution to the Jon Jones puzzle or whether the champ will be able to dominate his opponent in a similar fashion to most of his past fights. “Bones” will enter this fight as the favorite, but can number one contender Alexander Gustafsson cause an upset? Jon Jones last fought at UFC 159 in April, where he scored a first round TKO victory over renowned trash talker Chael Sonnen. Prior to that he picked up a fourth round submission win over veteran fighter Vitor Belfort at UFC 152 in September 2012, and recorded a dominant unanimous decision win over his former teammate and training partner Rashad Evans at UFC 145 in April 2012. Jones will no doubt look to secure his sixth straight title defense with a good performance against Gustafsson.
Alexander Gustafsson is currently riding a six fight winning streak, most recently defeating Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via unanimous decision at UFC on FOX 5 in December 2012. Prior to that he picked up a unanimous decision win over Thiago Silva at UFC on FUEL TV 2 in April 2012, and scored a first round TKO win over Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141 in December 2011. “The Mauler” will no doubt look to score a big win and take home the light heavyweight gold on September 21st.
